Governor's Awards

The Awards for the Humanities is an annual series of awards honoring the contribution of individuals and groups that enrich the civic, intellectual, and cultural life of all Alaskans through the wisdom and techniques of the humanities. Please scroll down for past humanities award recipients.

Criteria for nominees include (but are not limited to):

  • Impact in furthering/advocating for the humanities in Alaska;
  • Excellence in achievement in a field of study, area of research, or project related to the humanities;
  • Life-, group-, or institution-long commitment to the humanities in the state;
  • Innovation in the wisdom and methods of the humanities;
  • Leadership in expanding understanding and appreciation of the humanities in the state;
  • Representing the best of the humanities in Alaska to the rest of the nation and the world.

Eligibility

Any Alaskan individual, organization, or institution that has advanced the humanities in Alaska is eligible to be nominated. Current Board of Directors and staff of the Alaska Humanities Forum are not eligible for consideration.

Award Selection and Ceremony

Nominations may be submitted by mail, fax, or electronically, no later than September 3, 2012. Self-nominations are not allowed. A panel will be convened in early September to review nominations and pass along a list of proposed awardees for final approval to the Governor of Alaska. Final awardees will be contacted by the Alaska Humanities Forum, in conjunction with the Office of the Governor of Alaska. Governor's Awards will be announced in late September, 2012.

2010 Award Recipients

Eight outstanding citizens and one rural arts council were selected by Governor Parnell as the 2010 recipients of the Governor's Awards for the Arts and Humanities. The awards were presented during a dinner event at the Fairbanks Princess Riverside Lodge on Thursday, October 21, 2010. The awards were sponsored by the Alaska State Council on the Arts, the Alaska Office of the Governor.

2009 Award Recipients

The Awards for the Humanities is an annual series of awards honoring the contribution of individuals and groups that enrich the civic, intellectual, and cultural life of all Alaskans through the wisdom and techniques of the humanities. Governor Sean Parnell presented the 2009 Governor's Awards for the Humanities to Dr. Rudolph Krejci and Dr. James Kari, and the 2009 Alaska History Teacher of the Year Award to Lynda Leal. The awards were presented during a dinner event at the Hotel Captain Cook on Thursday, October 22, 2009. The awards are sponsored by the Alaska State Council on the Arts, the Alaska Humanities Forum and the Office of the Governor.
