Alaska's Statehood Experience

Rasmuson Foundation and the Alaska Humanities Forum are pleased to announce a partnership to create a competitive grant program for projects which commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Alaska Statehood. The Alaska Humanities Forum received a $1 million grant from Rasmuson Foundation to launch Alaska’s Statehood Experience (ASE). Grant projects and activities will explore the history of statehood, the circumstances locally and nationally that brought it about, and the meaning of statehood as Alaska looks ahead to the next fifty years.

ASE is also supported by corporate and private support and the National Endowment for the Humanities “We the People” program.

Alaska’s Statehood Experience will support two grant programs:
  • Alaska’s Statehood Experience major grants. These grants will explore the distinctive experiences and relationships of Alaska becoming the 49th state. They will show how such experiences and relationship informed our understanding then and shape identity now. Awards generally will not exceed $100,000. Deadline for application is May 15, 2008.
  • AK50: Our Stories Mini Grants. Aimed at students, classes, schools, and clubs for K-12, this mini-grant category will feature young Alaskans reflecting upon statehood, civics, and American identity from their perspective. Grant awards up to $2,000. Applications must be pre-approved and will be accepted on a rolling deadline until the end of the 2008-2009 academic year.
Alaska’s Statehood Experience Grant Guidelines & Application

Alaska’s Statehood Experience: Successful applicants will lead Alaskans to a greater reflection upon the meaning of statehood and citizenry; they will also show what the Alaska statehood experience can teach the rest of the US about the American experience. Grant Program submission deadline is May 15. Awards generally will not exceed $100,000.
