"Continuous Conversations" receives grant funding from Pride Foundation

February 12, 2019

Each year, Pride Foundation, headquartered in Seattle with regional offices across the Pacific Northwest, invests in community organizations that are actively addressing the needs of and expanding opportunities for LGBTQ people and their families in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.  The 2018-19 Pride Foundation Community Grants were recently released, and Alaska Humanities Forum is honored to be a recipient of funding to launch a new project in collaboration with Alaskan photographer Jenny Irene Miller.

"Continuous Conversations" will be hosted by Alaska Humanities Forum and interested community members and organizations across Alaska to cultivate statewide conversations about the intersections of gender, race, and identity.  The conversations will draw on Jenny Irene Miller's "Continuous" project that features portraits and interviews with members of Alaska's Indigenous LGBTQ and Two-Spirit communities.  This work, supported in part by a grant from the Forum, was featured in FORUM magazine in 2017, and also exhibited in the Forum's offices that spring.

As part of this new project, we will be creating facilitator guides, leading custom facilitation training, developing templates for promotional materials, and providing a small stipend to support community-based hosts to lead conversations. The Pride Foundation grant will support all of this work, with an initital focus in 2019 in Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks, Homer, Sitka, Nome, Kotzebue, and Utqiaġvik.  Additional funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) would allow us to expand to other communities going forward.

We are grateful to Pride Foundation for funding this exciting project, and looking forward to working closely with Jenny to develop programming to build and strengthen conversation and connections throughout Alaska.
